History
In 1964, Cardiologist Robert C. Atkins, had a serious weight problem. Worried about his predicament, Dr. Atkins, like most people with the same dilemma, began his search for the diet that would work best for him. After trying numerous slimming formulas, his research and experimentation led him to find the one diet that would change his entire life.
According to Jacqueline Eberstein, R.N., Director of Atkins Health & Medical Information Services in a TV interview on a British news program, Dr. Atkins found an article in a medical magazine that suggested a diet which almost eliminated carbohydrates, starchy foods, and even some fruit and vegetables, but allowed protein, meat, fish, eggs, and all the fats they contain. Almost dumbfounded and desperate, Robert Atkins gave it a try. And to his surprise, he had tremendous success. “He lost weight quickly, he felt good, his clothes got looser and he thought he'd really found something he could live with. So, because it worked so well for him, he decided he was going to start to try it on some patients that were also overweight”, said Eberstein.
Dr. Atkins' little experiment worked with stunning results. Patients not only lost wait quickly, but easily too. This prompted the good doctor to write his book: “Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution” in 1972, which introduced his “Atkins' Nutritional Approach”. This was a bold move, since his dietary model was in contradiction to the ideas of many medical and nutritional experts.
